Online map search

Our Geographic Information System (GIS) allows you to access a full range of local planning information.

The GIS combines information from Salisbury District Council's planning database with online maps from the Ordnance Survey.

Initial GIS screen

This means you can view information on a specific property, street, town or area on an accurate and up-to-date map.

Take me immediately to the online map search. I have read and understood the terms and conditions.

What kind of information can I find through the GIS?

You can use the system to:

  • search all information held by Salisbury District Council on the planning and building control history (post-1985) of any property in the district.
  • search current planning and building control applications.
  • find all planning constraints governing a specific area.
  • view all planning policies.

How do I search the system?

You can find information:

  • by entering a specific house, street, town or postcode in the search form. This is particularly useful if you want information on a specific property or group of properties.
  • by moving around the map. This is particularly useful if you want to get an overview of an area – any planning issues affecting it, developments, and so on.
Search results shown on GIS screen

You will then see a map centred on the property or area you have requested.

Then select what feature you want to see marked on the map – planning applications, conservation features, and so on. The results will be shown as highlighted areas or symbols in the appropriate places on the map.

Can I get further information on specific items?

You will find links to more information about specific features, policies, planning guidance and so on, that have come up in your search.

Is the system easy to use?

Yes. The GIS has been designed to be as simple and user-friendly as possible. We have also tested the system with the help of a range of users.

And we will continue to monitor what customers tell us to improve the system's usability.

Step-by-step help

At each stage of your search you will be guided by step-by-step text. And you will be able to find extra guidance in our help file if you need it. Read the help file.

Technical requirements

Do I need a high-speed Internet connection?
No. But the GIS delivers a lot of information to your computer. Therefore if you are not using a high-speed (broadband) connection, you may find the map and your requested information may take a few minutes to appear.
Please be patient
and remember that each time you click on a search, the system restarts the search. So clicking on the same search request more than once will not speed up the results. A symbol will appear on the screen while the database is retrieving results, so you will know that your search is in progress.
Firewalls and pop-up blocking
The search form and search results open in a separate window. If you are using a firewall with a pop-up blocker, you may be asked by your firewall if you want to allow pop-ups from this site. You will need to click 'yes' or 'ok'. If you're firewall does not ask you if you want to allow pop-ups, you will need to switch off the 'pop-up blocking' option in the firewall settings. This is normally very straightforward.
Java
Depending on the specification and age of your pc, you may get a message telling that you need a more recent version of Java to use the online system. Or you may find that the online map does not appear on your screen. In either event, use the help file to find out what to do.
