Strategic Landscape Assessment

In August 2007 Salisbury District Council appointed a consultant to undertake an up-to-date and comprehensive assessment of the landscape character of the district. The assessment would enable a better understanding of the district’s landscapes and will provide the context for policies and proposals within the forthcoming Local Development Framework (LDF) for Salisbury district.

Landscape Character Assessment

The Landscape Character Assessment provides an integrated assessment of the character of the district and will serve as a baseline of environmental information. It will aid understanding of the diversity, character, distinctiveness, sensitivity to change and management needs of the district's landscapes. The Landscape Character Assessment will be specifically used as a technical evidence base to inform the Local Development Framework currently being prepared by the council.

Settlement Setting Assessments

The Settlement Setting Assessments report was commissioned alongside the Landscape Character Assessment. It assesses the key sensitivities and capacities of the landscape within the settings of the District’s main settlements in relation to development and change, analysing the key qualities that are desirable to safeguard and giving recommendations on how and where new development might best be accommodated, within each settlement.

The settlements covered are:

  • Salisbury and Wilton
  • Amesbury, Bulford and Durrington
  • Alderbury
  • Mere
  • Tisbury
  • Downton
