Identification of strategic growth areas

Identification of strategic growth areas paper 1 and 2 form part of the evidence base for the selection of strategic housing and employment sites for inclusion in the various stages of consultation on the core strategy. The identification of strategic sites is an iterative process and the papers should be read in order as they describe the method and rationale for the selection of housing sites within the core strategy

Paper 1

This paper has been prepared to inform the preparation of the Core Strategy: Preferred Options. Its purpose is to identify:

  • Broad locations for the release of Greenfield sites to allow strategic housing and employment growth.
  • The identification of these locations will inform how strategic growth across the district will be distributed.
  • Brownfield areas for strategic growth.
  • Non-strategic, specific housing sites.

This paper builds on a review of relevant national government guidance, the emerging Regional Spatial Strategy for the South West and the District Council’s own evidence base, including the Sustainability Appraisal and findings of community engagement.

Paper 2

This paper is being prepared in support of the draft Core Strategy: Submission Draft.

Its purpose is to:

  • Identify more specifically Greenfield sites for strategic growth, based on some of the broad areas of land identified for growth in Paper 1.
  • Identify brownfield sites for strategic growth.

It builds on Paper 1, written in support of the Core Strategy: Preferred Options. In the first instance, this paper is being used to inform the next phase of consultation that will take place on the emerging draft Submission Draft, known as Our Place in the Future, beginning on September 1st.

It is important to recognise that this paper represents a continuous process and will be used to inform the preparation of the final Core Strategy: Submission Draft. The evidence base used to inform the Submission Draft, including this paper, is a continuous evolving process and there are likely to be changes that will need to be taken into. The response to this next round of community engagement beginning in September will be used to inform the final version of the Submission Draft as well as any other new evidence that emerges.
