Our place in the future - evidence and policy guidance

One of the most important principles of the new Local Development Framework system of planning is basing policies and decisions on strong evidence. Evidence can come from a wide range of sources, from the national level (such as the Census), through regional and county bodies (such as. the Wiltshire Biodiversity Action Plan), to local information and studies we have commissioned ourselves (such as on retail, open space, and flooding).

We must also ensure that all of our local policies accord with those at a regional and national level.

Topic papers

Each major theme in the Our Place booklet and questionnaire is supported by a Topic paper document which sets out the context, evidence and issues in more detail.

National planning policy

The government publishes Planning Policy Statements (PPS) which set out the main principles and objectives we have to adhere to in developing and implementing our Local Development Framework, under different policy areas such as Housing, Flooding, and Sustainable Development . You can read the Planning Policies Statements on the website of the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS)

The South West Regional Assembly (SWRA) is responsible for developing a Regional Spatial Strategy. Amongst other things this identifies the scale and distribution of new housing for each local authority in the region. Find out more on the Regional Spatial Strategy or visit the SWRA website www.southwest-ra.gov.uk
