Comment on a planning application

About this service

Every week the council sends a list of all the planning applications to the local newspaper (Salisbury and Amesbury Journals). In some cases a notice will be displayed at the site, in others neighbours may be notifed by letter: it depends on the type of application involved.

The best way to comment on a planning application is to write to the council. In this way, the council can take your views into account when making a recommendation or in negotiations with the applicant. If your comments are made in this way, the council will endeavour to ensure that they are summarised in the report that appears on the agenda for that meeting.

However, if you wish to make your comments in person, there is an opportunity to do so at Area Committee meetings (see also Speaking at meetings). In order to keep the meeting to a reasonable length, the Chairman will normally allow only one person to speak in objection to a particular application and one person to speak in support. The objectors have their opportunity first, followed then by the supporter. If a number of people wish to speak either for or against, before the meeting they should nominate a spokesperson. There will still be 3 minutes allowed in which to speak.

About your comments

Any comments that you make will be forwarded to the application case officer and will be taken into account when a decision is made. Please note that you must supply your name and address before submitting your comments.

Any comments you submit will be treated as a public document and will be open to public viewing on the application file and, in due course, on this website.

Any comments you make must comply with the following guidelines:

  • You must not publish material that is discriminatory, or could be seen to imply that Salisbury District Council was acting in a discriminatory way. Discrimination could be on the grounds of age, gender, disability, race, religion / belief and sexual orientation.
  • You must not reveal private information about an individual unless you can demonstrate that that information is in the public domain already, or unless the person has consented to have their name and details put into the public domain by the publishing of the material in this way.
  • You must not publish material that is libellous, defamatory or insulting towards an individual, company or other organisation.
  • You must not publish information that appears to incite a crime against an individual, company or organisation, or could be used to aid a crime.
  • You must not impersonate another person, or seek to imply that your comments are supported by anyone other than yourself and other named individuals, companies or organisations that you have authority to represent.

Due to the volume of representations that we receive it is not possible to give individual replies to each comment submitted. However you may continue to track the progress of the application on the website.
