Street naming and numbering

About this service

Advice and guidance on how to apply for a house or development address/postcode, and how to change a property name.

You will need

Prior to the naming of any new streets forming part of a development, or providing postal numbers for premises, it will be necessary to submit details of your proposals to your local authority for approval.

This is a legal requirement under the Towns Improvement Clauses Act 1847 and the Public Health Act 1925. It is the responsibility of the Building Control Section to determine whether the proposals meet with the Council's general guidelines and are not ambiguous or misleading in any way.

The Building Control Administrator will consult Ward Councillors/ local Parish Council plus the Royal Mail Address Management Centre. We notify each of the emergency services on your behalf following final approval. It is therefore advisable to discuss this matter at the earliest opportunity.

In addition to the naming and numbering of new streets we also can help with address anomalies and we also deal with the repair and replacement of the street signs throughout the district.
