Kerbside recycling

Black box collection

Black box

The black box service allows the collection of the following recyclable materials from the kerbside:

Food and drink cans, aerosols and clean foil

Do put in:

All food and drinks cans and tins, empty aerosol cans and clean aluminium foil.

Newspapers, magazines and paper

Do put in:

Newspapers, Yellow Pages, catalogues (but not hardbacked), magazines, junk mail, leaflets, envelopes (with plastic windows removed), white printer paper and most telephone directories.

Do not put in:

Shredded paper, cardboard (why not?*), greetings cards, books, hardback catalogues, metallic wrapping paper, greaseproof paper.

Mixed textiles and clothes

Do put in:

Clean clothes, pairs of shoes, leather belts, handbags, blankets, duvet covers and sheets. Place them in a knotted carrier bag - they need to be kept dry.

Do not put in:

Duvets or pillows.

Glass bottles and jars

Do put in:

All clear, green and brown glass bottles and jars - please rinse them out and remove lids.

Do not put in:

Broken glass, flat glass, window panes, spectacles, glass ovenware (eg: Pyrex), lightbulbs.

*Why not shredded paper or cardboard?
Shredded paper can cause littering during collection. If you have a home compost bin you can put all your shredded paper in and it will compost with your garden waste. You can also take it to either Salisbury or Amesbury household waste recycling centres where it can go in the paper banks.

Visit www.recycleforwiltshire.com/recycling for more information about what can go in the boxes or download our full Adobe PDFGuide to the new waste and recycling service 549kb.

If you have not received a black box

Black boxes will not be delivered to flats or other communal dwellings at present. An assessment of each of these communal dwellings will take place and where possible other recycling facilities will be provided.

Report non-delivery of boxes or missed black box collections or request a replacement black box.

See our frequently asked questions for more information.

Cardboard collection

All areas of the district receive a separate fortnightly cardboard collection in the same day as your black box.

What will be collected:

  • cereal boxes
  • cardboard sleeves
  • clean frozen food boxes
  • shoe boxes
  • corrugated cardboard
  • paper fibre egg boxes
  • cardboard tubes (for example toilet roll, kitchen roll)

Please ensure all plastic packaging (plastic bags, polystyrene etc) has been removed and flatten all cardboard boxes to help the collectors fit more cardboard onto the vehicles.

What will not be collected:

  • take away food packaging (including disposal drinks cups)
  • waxed cartons eg Tetra Paks (fruit juice, UHT milk etc)
  • waxed cartons or waxed packaging
  • boxes containing food remnants eg pizza boxes
  • boxes with plastic windows

These items cannot be recycled by the cardboard recycling processor.

How?
Cardboard will be collected provided it is bundled together with string or placed in cardboard boxes to reduce the risk of it being blown about by the wind.
When?
Cardboard should be put out by 7am on the same day as your black box. Please refer to your black box calendar for collection dates.
Where?
Cardboard should be placed at the kerbside or as near to the kerbside as possible without causing obstruction to vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians.

From October 2008 we will start a fortnightly kerbside collection of plastic bottles and cardboard for recycling using 180 litre wheeled bins with blue lids.
