The Community Initiatives Unit works with Wiltshire Health Promotion Service (WHPS), local medical practices and 6 local exercise providers:
to provide a comprehensive GP Recommendation to Exercise Programme.
Medical practioners can 'recommend' people to take up exercise rather than prescribe medication, this is a particularly effective route for those recovering from injuries and long term illness, those suffering from depression and those whose general health or lifestyle indicate a need to be more active.
Following a thorough health check patients are given the option of attending one of the 6 participating exercise providers on 12 week courses of programmed exercise to suit their individual medical needs.
The patient benefits from reduced cost exercise (approximately £2.50 per session) and is provided with the impetus to change to a more healthy lifestyle.
The new National Quality Assurance Framework has given the scheme new guidelines to work to and in the future the Community Initiatives Unit and WHPS aim to provide increased training and information opportunities to providers to ensure the clients get the best and latest programmes.
