Home Watch scheme

Home Watch is a joint scheme between council staff and Wiltshire police, designed to keep our local communities safe and well.

Over 130 council staff from Environmental Services and Housing Management regularly visit all corners of south Wiltshire. They have a tremendous level of knowledge about the district's homes and residents, which through the Home Watch scheme can greatly benefit the community.

Making your community safer

Using the principles of Neighbourhood Watch schemes, Home Watch enables council staff to report any suspicious incidents to the police. Most Environmental Services and Housing Management staff are in direct radio or telephone contact with their units at all times, so they can contact the police to follow up on reports immediately.

Staff are alert to incidents such as:

  • a build up of newspapers or milk bottles at an elderly or disabled resident's home;
  • a strange van parked outside a resident's house when the resident is on holiday;
  • drawn curtains when you would normally expect to see the resident at your time of arrival;
  • doors and windows left open in a house where they would normally be closed;
  • suspicious individuals, including motorists, in quiet residential areas;
  • anything out of the ordinary which arouses suspicion.
