Age Concern handyperson service

The Handyperson scheme is a service that helps older people to remain living independently in the community by assisting with a range of minor household repairs. The service is managed and run by Age Concern Salisbury and sponsored by Salisbury District Council.

When does the scheme operate?

The scheme operates from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. There is no emergency service but if the job is urgent they will do all they can to visit as soon as possible.

What kind of jobs can be carried out?
  • Fitting smoke detectors;
  • adaptation of taps and replacing washers;
  • renewing bath sealant;
  • fitting rails;
  • replacing light bulbs, fuses and plugs;
  • moving and installing telephone extension sockets;
  • small carpentry work including easing doors, small fencing work and lowering shelves;
  • work to prevent trips such as refitting loose carpets, providing extension leads where they are trailing, moving heavy furniture and levelling paving slabs.

Normally the job should take no longer than 2 hours to complete.

Is there a charge?

Normally there is a small hourly charge of £10 per hour, but in some cases work can be undertaken at no cost. To qualify for a free service you should be over 60, in receipt of pension credit, council tax benefit, rent rebate or be physically disabled. You should be either an owner-occupier or privately renting.

How should I pay?

You will not be asked for any money at the time that the work is carried out but will be invoiced directly from the Age Concern, Salisbury District office.
