Local housing allowance

About this service

Local Housing Allowance was rolled out on 7 April 2008 and this will change the way that private sector rents are assessed and paid. From that date, new customers claiming Local Housing Allowance will receive their benefit directly - it will no longer be paid to a landlord or agent.

How to work out what you may receive

Step 1
Work out your room allocation.
Step 2
Check which Broad Market Rental Area the property you want to live in falls under. You can do this by referring to your area by postcode or the map of areas.
Step 3
Now you know your room allocation and Broad Market Rental Area. Use this information against the rates by area to find out your Local Housing Allowance rate.
Step 4

Finally, any money you have coming into the household or savings you may hold may affect you receiving the full rate of Local Housing Allowance.
