Why tackle benefit fraud?

Benefit fraud cheats us all. It is not a victimless crime

Look at this: an estimated £2 billion is lost to social security fraud in the UK every year. That is £2 billion lost to the NHS, schools, pensions, genuine benefit claimants, and to every tax payer.

Ignorance is no defence

All claimants receive the information necessary to make a genuine claim. Everyone is aware of what they need to tell us to get the correct benefits entitlement for their situation.

Salisbury District Council works hard to ensure everyone gets the support that they need. We also work hard to stop those who cheat the system from doing so.

You can help us stop benefit fraud

Tell us in confidence if you think someone is claiming benefit they are not entitled to. Report a benefit fraud

Tell us if you think you are receiving too much. If we need to reassess your claim, we can do so reasonably and fairly. Change of circumstances.

Common examples of situations where people have been caught committing benefit fraud include:

  • making false statements about earnings or capital
  • not telling us about other benefits or sources of income
  • not telling us about changes to their circumstances
  • not telling us if you live with a partner
  • providing the wrong address

If you would like to contact us in confidence to report suspected benefit fraud, or talk to us about your claim, call: 01722 434420.
