Housing and council tax benefit

Housing benefit helps council and private tenants on low incomes to pay their rent. Council tax benefit is available for the liable person in the household, or possibly in the form of a second adult rebate.

Benefits services are means-tested, and the amount of income and savings in your household are compared with your personal circumstances. If you have over £16,000 in capital, and you are not receiving income support, you are not eligible for housing or council tax benefit.

The current delay for processing housing and council tax benefit applications is 5 days from receipt of a fully completed application form. If you have not been contacted after 3 weeks, please contact us on 01722 434483.

Salisbury District Council deals with approximately 20,000 benefit applications each year and provides over £20 million in direct financial support.

Note that from 7 April 2008 the new Local Housing Allowance will be introduced with new private housing benefit customers receiving benefit direct and changes in assessment. Property landlords or agents can contact us directly for more information.

For information about other benefits and services, not relating to housing or council tax, see the website of the Department of Work and Pensions.
