When there is severe weather such as gales or snow in south Wiltshire, some council services may be temporarily disrupted. We will make every effort to keep you informed about any alterations in service and other news, through local radio stations and by updating this website.
You can find out from the Met Office whether any severe weather warnings have been issued for the area.
Please also see our separate pages on flooding.
In severe weather we may be unable to collect your normal household waste as normal. If your waste has not been collected by 3pm on the day following your normal collection, this means we have been unable to reach you. Weather permitting, we will collect your waste as normal next week.
Weather conditions could also disrupt special collections of bulky household waste. We will aim to contact individual customers directly if there are problems with their scheduled collections.
You need to take particular care of your house in cold weather. Council tenants can report problems in the usual way (see Housing repairs page) – find out how emergency repairs such as loss of hot water are to be dealt with.
Note that housing repairs by council staff may be disrupted in bad weather if roads are made impassable by snow or if the weather makes it dangerous for staff to carry out maintenance such as roof repairs. Peak demand in cold and icy weather may mean that we cannot carry out certain repairs as quickly as we would like, but please let us know if the problem is an emergency.
Wiltshire County Council carry out road gritting and snow clearance. Their website also provides some good advice on road safety during the winter.
The latest traffic information can be obtained from the Highways Agency. It is also worth reading their winter safety recommendations.
Wiltshire County Council provide information to local radio stations, including BBC Radio Wiltshire (103.5FM and 104.3FM) and Spire FM (102FM), announcing any school closures.
