Salisbury District Council is currently ranked in the top 30% of councils in England for its overall performance. The council achieved a rating of 'good' in the most recent full assessment – published in May 2004. The council missed out on a rating of 'excellent' by just three points.

In 2005 the Audit Commission changed the way it carried out the next round of CPA assessments for district councils. This put greater emphasis on assessing how district councils use their resources and how they provide value for money for local residents. It is part of a wider improvement agenda set out in the Local Government White Paper Strong Local Leadership – Quality Public Services.
