Stonehenge planning application
Latest information
English Heritage's plans for a new Stonehenge visitor centre have been given conditional approval.
In the 
Stonehenge decision letter of 28 March 2007 243kb Secretary
of State Ruth Kelly
said the scheme could only go ahead once the government had approved the published A303 roads scheme.
On 6 December 2007, the government decided not to fund the A303 improvements. Salisbury District Council issued a statement in response to this news.
In
February 2008 Salisbury District Council renewed its pledge to work towards improving the visitor facilities
at Stonehenge and issued a Position statement on Stonehenge World Heritage Site 27kb
Earlier in 2006 English Heritage resubmitted their planning application to develop a new visitor centre for Stonehenge. The council approved the application in July, subject to a number of conditions. This application was identical to the one English Heritage submitted to the council in 2004.
A public inquiry was then be
held by the Planning Inspectorate, during December 2006. A decision was made by
the Secretary
of State was made in a Stonehenge decision letter of 28 March 2007 243kb.
