Equalities and diversity

Salisbury District Council's Cabinet is determined to embed equality and diversity and lay the foundations for a sustainable countywide 'model' for the new unitary authority in this area of work.

An Equality and Diversity Board has been established to provide a strong political and corporate lead on and oversee a new approach to the way in which the issues are to be approached. It is the intention to raise awareness of equality and diversity issues within the council and develop a consistently fair approach in delivering all the services we provide, both frontline and in support of frontline.

The Board comprises key members to ensure political leadership, senior officers who have the capacity to make change happen, officers with relevant experience and representatives from key external organisations, including the police, fire service and health authority, who can provide external challenge.

The first meeting of the Board took place on Monday 22 October, chaired by Steve Fear, Deputy Leader of the council.

Four sub-groups have been created to deliver the Board's vision:

  • development and training,
  • equality impact assessment and monitoring,
  • community engagement and communication, and
  • equality and diversity 'champions'.

The various sub-groups will meet ahead of the December Board meeting and are beginning their work programmes and a council-wide training programme is now being rolled out.

Monday 3 December 2008 was designated national 'Disability Day' and the council marked it, along with the other Wiltshire councils. Read more about the countywide 'No Barriers' event.
