Parish review - third stage consultation

The consultation

A questionnaire was sent to all 17,925 city council residents in September. The total number of responses received from 3,915 people - 22% of all residents.

The results of the survey are given below in the form of an annotated questionnaire.

Headlines from the survey include:

  • 93% agree that the council should be called Salisbury City Council
  • 90% support the preferred option that the number of parish wards should be the same as the number and boundaries of Wiltshire Council electoral divisions, as finally determined by the Boundary Committee.
  • 77% agree that there should be three councillors per ward
  • 58% of those who replied in Stage 2 of the consultation also responded in Stage 3

Survey responses

Q1. In the last consultation 86% of respondents agreed that the parish council is named Salisbury City Council. We continue to recommend this.

  • 93% agreed with the proposed name of Salisbury City Council (3633)
  • 4% preferred Salisbury Parish Council (149)
  • 1% preferred Salisbury Town Council (38)
  • 1% preferred City of New Sarum Council (61)
  • 1% did not agree or give any alternative suggestions (64)

Q2. It was recommended that the number of parish wards for the unparished area of Salisbury should be the same as the number of boundaries of Wiltshire Council electoral division covering the city, as finally determined by the Boundary Committee.

  • 90% preferred the option as proposed by Salisbury District Council (3542)
  • 3% would prefer an alternative option (123)
  • 7% gave no answer at all (250)

Q3. Based on comparisons with other town councils, Salisbury District Council is recommending that there should be three councilors per ward.

  • 78% agreed to three councilors per ward (3023)
  • 3% did not agree with the recommendation (102)
  • 18% would prefer to have 2 councilors per ward (724)
  • 2% did not give any answer (66)

Q4. In line with the proposals from the Boundary Committee the following parish ward names have been recommended (see map).

  • 93% agreed with the recommendations (3652)
  • 3% did not agree (116)
  • 1% gave alternative suggestions (11)
  • 3% did not give any answer (136)

Q4. Do you have any other comments to make?

  • 89% made no comment (3484)
  • 11% made a comment (431)

  • 58% had submitted views in stage 2 of the consultation and again for stage 3 (2246)
  • 42%were new respondents that had not previously submitted any thoughts (1630)
  • Stage 3 received 767 more replies than the previous consultation stage (Stage 2 – 3,148 / Stage 3 – 3,915)
