Electoral register - view or buy the information

About this service

There are now two versions of the Electoral Register:-

  • The full register lists the name and address of everyone who is registered to vote and is updated every month. The main use of the full register is to show who can vote in elections and referendums. Credit reference agencies can use it, but only to check the names and addresses of people applying for credit. It can also be used for law enforcement.
  • The edited register is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose. Electors can choose not to have their details included in the edited register, which is kept separate from the full register.

Different rules apply to the inspection, purchase, supply and use of each version of the Register.

You will need

The Full Register is only available for inspection, under supervision, at the council offices at Pennyfarthing House, Salisbury. Copying this version is not permitted except by way of hand written notes.

The law says who can have a copy of the full register and what they can use it for. The full list of persons and purposes is given in the Representation of the People (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2002 (SI 2002 No.1871).

The Edited Version is available for inspection at the council's offices and in most libraries. Copies can be bought by any person, company or organisation and can be used for commercial activities such as marketing.

Payment

Inspection of both registers is free.

There are statutory fees to purchase copies of the Edited Register and the Full Register (where permitted). These vary based on the format required and the number of electors in the area. For further details please contact the Electoral Services Team.
