In recent years there has been much debate about the effectiveness of CCTV in reducing crime. In 2003 the Community Safety Partnership produced a report on making the most of CCTV in Salisbury. The Panel decided to put this evidence into practice and is reviewing CCTV to ensure that residents and business in South Wiltshire are getting the best deal from their CCTV service.
This review will look at whether the public and businesses support CCTV, and where people most want it to be focused, as well as the most cost effective way to finance CCTV in the future including a plan for investment in new digital technology.
The review group will invite evidence from the public, the City Centre Management, local businesses, the police, parish and town councils, the Community Safety Partnership as well as experts on CCTV to identify the key issues.
The group will then present the report of their findings and strategic recommendations to Salisbury District Council's Cabinet.
20 September – 15 November 2005: The review group will invite submissions from the public.
October/November 2005: The review group will hold fact-finding sessions and site visits to engage all those people and organisations that the group would like to question.
December 2005: The first draft of the review group's report will be published.
January 2006: The final report will be submitted to Salisbury District Council's Cabinet.
