Salisbury was officially twinned with Saintes in 1990, and since then many visits and exchanges have taken place. Families and individuals, schoolchildren and students, clubs and societies, commercial and trade organisations have all taken part and enjoyed the experience. Benefits of the twinning have included:

Groupe Folklorique Aunis et Saintonge
The Salisbury-Saintes Twinning Association is an informal, non profit-making organisation which helps to set up links between Salisbury and the lively town of Saintes, the regional centre of the Charente Maritime. The association organises group visits to Saintes, including accommodation in French homes and visits to local places of interest. In return, members offer to host their French counterparts when they visit Salisbury. There is no need to speak French - but it's a fun way to learn!
Social activites of the association in Salisbury include skittles, petanque, barn dances and barbecues.
The Mayor of New Sarum is invited to be the President of the Salisbury-Saintes Twinning Association.

Saintes is a Gallic-Roman town situated in the Charente-Maritime region of France, some 500 miles from the Channel Ports, but very near to Cognac and La Rochelle. The town has a population of around 30,000. Local attractions include the well-preserved Roman amphitheatre and arch, a beautiful cathedral (completed between the 15th and 18th centuries), the Abbaye aux Dames, the majestic River Charente, and a colourful market that sells everything from artichokes to oysters.
