The Mayor of New Sarum (Salisbury)

The Mayor for the City of New Sarum is elected each June for the forthcoming year by the Charter Trustees for the city.

The Mayor has a civic role to represent the city at events and functions. This may be at home, in the surrounding area or abroad. The Mayor is also invited to be the President of the Salisbury-Saintes Twinning Association.

He or she chairs the meetings of the Charter Trustees, whose duty it is to upkeep the traditions and standards of the city, to maintain the city silver, plate, portraits and other valuables owned by the city, and to elect the Mayor each year.

The Mayor and Mayoress will perform duties such as the opening of business -premises, annual fairs or the presentation of awards, certificates or prizes at city events for schools, colleges or for other bodies.

The Mayor will lead the civic procession whenever convened at city events, ranging from Remembrance Day to high profile royal visits. On these occasions the Mayor is escorted by the Mayor's Clerk, the City Beadles and Macebearers.

The Mayor will also hold receptions in the Guildhall for visiting parties or delegations to the city.

Supporting all local charities where possible, the Mayor also creates an annual Mayor's Appeal for a local charity of his or her choice. Past Mayor's Appeals have proved successful not only in raising much need funds but also raising the profile of the chosen charity.
