How the council works

The Full Council is made up of 55 councillors, also called elected members. They meet in various committees to make decisions for the district. You can find out more about the councillors and the committees in other parts of the website.

The way the council works is recorded in the Constitution and there are Overview and Scrutiny panels, the Standards Committee and a Regulatory Panel to make sure the council works properly.

The day to day operation of the council is carried out by the employees of the council, called the officers of the council. There are nearly 700 employees of the council at the moment. The officers of the council also provide administrative support to a number of outside groups and organisations.

The officers and elected members have a vision, ambition and core values for the council.

In the Councillors section you can find out about the political Leader and the Chairman of the council. The city of Salisbury also has a Mayor who is elected annually by the Charter Trustees, the councillors from the Salisbury city area.
