News feeds allow you to see when we have added new content. You can get the latest information in one place, as soon as its published, without having to check our website.
Feeds are also known as RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication.
In general, the first thing you need is a piece of software called a newsreader. Some modern browsers such as Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 have a newsreader built in. Otherwise, there are many other newsreaders available, some of which are online and accessible through a browser; and some of which you need to download onto your computer.
Browser-based news readers let you catch up with your RSS feed subscriptions from any computer, whereas downloadable applications let you store them on your main computer. In general, a browser-based newsreader is better if you frequently need to work from several different computers (for example, a home computer, a work computer, and in internet cafes on the move). A downloadable newsreader is better if you will primarily be reading feeds just from one computer.
Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive. For example, if you would like the latest Salisbury District Council press releases, just visit the press releases page and you will notice an orange button at the bottom of the page. Different newsreaders have different mechanisms for subscribing, but typically it is as simple as dragging the button onto your newsreader, or clicking on it and cutting and pasting the feed URL into your newsreader.
