Stray dogs

About this service

From 6 April 2008 stray dogs can no longer be taken to a police station.

A stray dog in a public place may be seized by the council dog warden or a member of the public.

During office hours (9am-5pm Monday to Friday) the animal will be collected by the council’s dog warden.

Outside these hours, up until 10pm and including weekends and public holidays, the finder of a stray dog can arrange to deliver it to the council's acceptance centre by telephoning 01722 411676.

The council is required to retain the dog for seven days (unless claimed by the owner) before attempting to re-home it.

If an animal is reclaimed by the owner they must pay a statutory fee and costs when claiming the dog (see 'Payment' below).

You will need

  • Your name, address and telephone number

  • Breed and colour of dog
  • Name and address of owner if known

Payment

  • Statutory Fee £25
  • Admin cost £5 + VAT
