Burial of the dead at public expense

Under the provisions of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984 the council has a duty to cause to be buried or cremated the body of any person who has died or been found dead in their area in any case where it appears to the council that no suitable arrangements for the disposal of the body have been or are being made.

The council is not responsible for disposing of the body of any person who has died in hospital. In these cases the Bereavements Officer at the hospital should be contacted.

Both the Benefits Agency and the Social Services offices receive updated guidance notes for their information.

Printed guidance notes are available for Nursing and Residential Homes on request.
