Crematorium and burial services

Salisbury Crematorium was opened in 1960 on the North East outskirts of the city. It occupies a site of 6.5 acres, with the grounds laid out as lawns and gardens. The beautiful mature trees and shrubs give an air of peace and tranquillity to the surroundings and are a haven for quiet contemplation and remembrance.

The Chapel has seating for approximately 70 people and is dedicated for services of all religions or creed. However, if a religious service is not required, it is possible to just sit quietly for a while, or have a family member or friend say a few words. A favourite piece of music could also be played. The crematorium has a resident organist who will play any kind of music to suit the type of service required, alternatively, a tape or CD can be played. Services are held every 45 minutes, however, the time allotted for the actual service is 25 minutes – this is to allow time for people to meet after the service.

Following cremation there are various memorials available, these include Book of Remembrance, Bronze Wall Plaques or Stone Memorial Tablets, Memorial Vases or Rose Bushes. Vases are also provided for people wishing to bring flowers in memory of a loved one.

Devizes Road Cemetery was opened in 1856 and to date there have been 13,892 interments including cremated remains. The London Road Cemetery opened one year later and to date there have been 24,631 interments, including cremated remains. There is a small Chapel on site in the Devizes Road Cemetery with seating for around 20 people; on the other hand the Crematorium Chapel is sometimes used for services of burial in the London Road Cemetery.

Buried in both Devizes Road and London Road Cemeteries, are casualties of the First and Second World Wars. A "Cross of Sacrifice" memorial designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield was erected after the Second World War in honour of all service war dead buried there. This fine memorial, 7 metres in height, is situated in the main avenue of London Road Cemetery.

The last new grave was dug in 2001, although there have been re-openings of existing graves where one partner has been buried. The last full burial took place in the Devizes Road Cemetery in September 2001; it is now full except for cremated remains plots. We are are now searching London Road for any grave spaces available for burials. The council is actively looking for a new burial ground in the Salisbury area.
