CCTV

Salisbury District Council operates CCTV cameras in Salisbury city centre, and parts of Amesbury and Wilton.

Why have CCTV?

The use of CCTV in and around Salisbury has a number of significant benefits for residents and businesses. The availability and operation of CCTV equipment can help to:

  • enhance personal safety and increase confidence
  • manage traffic, spot and deal with traffic problems more quickly
  • assist the emergency services deal with fire, injury or crime more quickly
  • deter crime and reduce the fear of crime
  • detect crime and where necessary provide evidence for proceedings
  • encourage greater use of the facilities in the district

Salisbury District Council also monitors its car parks through CCTV cameras. This allows us to enhance the personal safety and confidence of car parks users, and to protect vehicles from theft or vandalism.

Salisbury District Council works with a number of groups and organisations to increase the benefits of CCTV in Salisbury District:

Police

Salisbury District Council CCTV operators are able to provide police officers with detailed and up-to-the-minute information. This helps the Police to deal with incidents quicker, and to allocate appropriate resources.

City Watch Radio Scheme

Currently more than 70 local retailers and businesses are part of the Radio Scheme. Shop and business staff can alert CCTV operators and Police immediately if an incident occurs. The scheme helps to protect staff and the public.

Close cooperation between local retailers and Salisbury District Council's CCTV operation also helps to combat credit card fraud and other 'high street' crime.

Pub Watch

The Pub Watch schemes in Salisbury and Amesbury enable the exchange of useful information. The long-term aim of such schemes is to help reduce the number of alcohol-related incidents.

Chaperone

If you feel particularly threatened or vulnerable, the council's CCTV operators can monitor your safe progress through areas covered by CCTV operation. This can help give residents and visitors extra confidence when out alone, and can help increase personal safety.

Code of Practice

Strict legislation governs the use of CCTV – particularly in the areas of privacy and data protection.
