Taxi and private hire licence - background information

Salisbury District Council has a statutory responsibility to licence the taxi (hackney carriage) and private hire trade.

Public safety is the main reason why the licensing of taxi and private hire drivers, vehicles and operators are regulated. The council is required to ensure that all licence holders are "fit and proper" persons to be licensed and that vehicles are accessible and safe to use. In order to achieve this all new drivers are vetted with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and all vehicles are subjected to a stringent testing procedure.

All licences are issued for a period of 12 months.

  • Hackney Carriage and Private Hire driver licences are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.
  • Hackney Carriage vehicle licences are valid from 1 August to 31 July each year.
  • Private Hire vehicle and operator licences are valid from 1 July to 30 June each year.
