Cinema licence

Premises must have a licence to be used for showing films ('film exhibition'). This covers the showing of moving pictures other than by simultaneous reception and exhibition of programmes in a programme service within the meaning of the Broadcasting Act 1990.

For example, an establishment showing live football on TV would not need a cinema licence. But they may need a cinema licence to show feature films on video or DVD.

Note: Cinema licences ceased in November 2005. Licensing of cinemas now falls under the 2003 Licensing Act.
