Facts and statistics

  • 88% of the public (including smokers) favour smoke-free workplaces (2005, Office of National Statistics).
  • In Ireland, 93% of people think their smoke free law, already in force and applying to all public places, is a good idea (including 80% of smokers).
  • Exceptions to the 2007 smoke-free legislation include residential premises, such as oil rigs, halls of residence, adult hospices, long-stay adult residential care homes, psychiatric hospitals, prisons and other ‘places of detention’.

Health and safety benefits

The new legislation also helps highlight the health and safety issues associated with smoking in the workplace. Passive smoking is known to

  • increase the risk of cancer and heart disease by 20-30%;
  • trigger asthma attacks and other respiratory problems;
  • cause 600 UK deaths each year from workplace exposure alone (out of a total of 12,000 UK deaths attributed to second-hand smoke exposure).
