Smoke-free public places and workplaces

The House of Commons voted in February 2006, by a majority of 200, for comprehensive smoke-free legislation, covering all enclosed and substantially enclosed public places including pubs and clubs. This legislation comes into force on 1 July 2007.

A premises will be considered to be enclosed if it has a ceiling or roof, and except for doors, windows or passagements, are wholly enclosed, whether on a permanent or temporary basis.

Premises are substantially enclosed if they have a ceiling or roof, but there are permanent openings in the walls which are less than half of the total area of the walls. This is known as the 50% rule. When calculating the area of an opening, no account can be taken of windows, doors or other fittings that can be open or shut.

Further guidance can be found in the leaflets below.

We have produced two leaflets providing key information on what the smoking ban will mean.

How to go smoke-free

Salisbury District Council has joined forces with the county’s other three district councils and a local Primary Care Trust (PCT) to form the Wiltshire Smoke Free Alliance.

The Alliance will provide support and advice to local companies who are looking to introduce a smoke-free work place before the new ban comes into force.

To help businesses become smoke free and introduce a smoke free policy, the Alliance has introduced a Adobe PDFGuide to Smoke Free Workplaces 270kb.

If you require support in going smoke-free or support for your employees who want to stop smoking, please contact Salisbury District Council on 01722 434319 or 434320 and ask about assistance in going smoke-free or email smokefreeworkplaces@kennetandnwilts-pct.nhs.uk

You can also visit the NHS's www.gosmokefree.co.uk website for further help and advice on quitting.
