Fairtrade city

Salisbury District Council is committed to Salisbury becoming a Fairtrade City and as well as actively promoting Fairtrade within the council, working in partnership with the Salisbury Fairtrade Group, will work with local businesses and organisations to promote Fairtrade throughout the City.

What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is designed to guarantee that producers receive a minimum price for their goods which enables them to earn a decent wage. The Fairtrade mark is a guarantee of standards rather than a brand of product and means that the shopper knows that their goods meet a certain ethical and financial standards as well as being of high quality.

The Fairtrade Mark ensures:

  • A fair minimum price for producers
  • A premium for producers to invest in their communities – clean water, healthcare, education, the environment
  • Long term and more direct trading relations

More information on the Fairtrade Mark is available from The Fairtrade Foundation.

What is a Fairtrade City?

A Fairtrade City (or Town, Village, Borough...) is a place where a network of people and organisations have got together to promote Fairtrade through events, publicity and persuasion. As in most places, in Salisbury, the network is a partnership of community and faith groups, campaigning organisations and businesses selling or supplying Fairtrade products locally, and the local council.

There are five goals to achieve before the Fairtrade Organisation will award the city with Fairtrade City status:

Goal 1: Local Council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agrees to serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in its offices and canteens
A resolution was passed by Salisbury District Council on 10 December 2007.
Goal 2: A range of Fairtrade products are readily available in the area's shops, and local cafes / catering establishments

A range of shops and cafes already have Fairtrade products available and the Fairtrade Steering Group is continuously approaching local traders and organisations to encourage further participation.

Goal 3: Fairtrade products are used by a number of local work places (estate agents, hairdressers etc) and community organisations (churches, schools etc)

All churches in the Salisbury Diocese use Fairtrade products as do the churches in the Methodist circuit.

Salisbury Fairtrade group in partnership with Salisbury District Council are currently canvassing local employers for support in the use of Fairtrade products.

Goal 4: Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign

The Fairtrade Steering group are currently canvassing support from local traders for Fairtrade Fortnight 2008.

Press releases are being made available to all local newspapers.

Goal 5: A local Fairtrade steering group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fairtrade Town/City status

Salisbury Fairtrade group was formalised in May 2005 with a sub committee, Salisbury Fairtrade City Steering Group, convened in November 2008 to help with the bid for Salisbury to become a Fairtrade City.
